I will not be the first or last to comment on the spotty origins of the line of David, the lineage of the Messiah ben David.

Genesis 38:2 וַיַּרְא-שָׁם יְהוּדָה בַּת-אִישׁ כְּנַעֲנִי, וּשְׁמוֹ שׁוּעַ

I recently bought my first hassidic book, the Mei haShiloah, on a trip to Rosenblum’s on Chicago’s North Side. I’ve heard good things about it and decided to give this old misnaged (non-hasid) a little ruhiyut (spirtuality).
