Original Jewish is a collaboration of Jews who take a fresh approach to Judaism and Torah
Benjamin Fleischer (OJ), Administrator
Benjamin loves Torah and Judaism. He takes a scientific and historical approach to Judaism while remaining sensitive to the context of Jewish texts and their related traditions. Benjamin studied at the Conservative Yeshiva in 2000-2001 and was known affectionately as “the Fleischer Rebbe”. His old blog is at http://torah.originaljewish.com but he thinks he’ll post here from now on.
When Benjamin thought up a quote for his wife’s engagement ring he remembered Shir haShirm via Idan Raichel (“הנך יפה”) and came up with מָּצָאתִי, אֵת שֶׁאָהֲבָה נַפְשִׁי which turned out to be Shir haShirim 3:4. !ברוך שכיוונתי
Rabbi Bruce Bromberg Seltzer (RB)
Ravbruce believes Judaism is caught more than taught. Since 2002, he has been helping students at Smith College and Amherst College catch his dream of vibrant, meaningful Jewish life as they take ownership of their Jewish journeys. Previously, he worked in Hillel positions at Duke University, Drew University, and Hofstra University. I have spent most summers since college at Camp Ramah New Enlgand as a counselor, staff educator, Rosh Tefilla, and volunteer staff educator. At Ramah, I met my wife, Jewish Day School Educator Deborah Bromberg Seltzer. We live with our four children in Northampton, MA.
After earning a BA at Franklin & Marshall College (‘93), Ravbruce studied at Pardes (‘93-’94), Machon Schechter/Conservative Yeshiva (‘98-99), and JTS Rabbinical School (MA/Rabbinic Ordination ‘00).
He uses technology and pop-culture to make Judaism meaningful to students, uses Jewish texts to study current ethical and political issues, and has academic interests in Critical Talmud Study and the history of Jewish publishing.
